I am in my 60's and have had scoliosis since childhood- basically untreated but I do see a chirpractor weekly. I do Pilates, both machine and mat exercises, and just found this site. Is Pilates contraindicative for quite severe scoliosis?

my husband, 35, has severe scoliosis, i don't know all the specifics but last night he told me his life expectancy will be less than mine bcause of the condition. is that true? has anyone else heard that? i REALLY HOPE NOT!!! also can anyone give me any ideas on exercises he can do at home? has anything worked for anyone here? his doc won't even give him pain meds. i read several articles that say exercise won't stop the progression but can slow it down. i'm so worried and want to do all i can. all answers are GREATLY appreciated!

Sandra i am having the same problems and i just don't know what to do. I have the same rods and same scar and i have pain in my hip and lower back a lot. The meds that i was given only makes me sleep but the pain still is there when i awake. I have noticed a change in how i walk lately and my right foot is slightly turned in when i walk. I was told that my rods had shifted and that was most likey the reason for that. I was denied disablity so many times that i just gave up and found me a job.

I am 27 years old and i have scoliosis. My surgery was done when i was 12 years old and everyday i feel as if it was yesterday.A couple of years ago i went to a specialist and he told me that my spine is still crooked and that i needed to have the surgery over bc i never got my rods adjusted. I am not going thru this again bc theres a chance that i could be paralized if they go back in and i can't risk that i have 4 kids so its not happening.I miss work sometimes bc by back gives out on me and i feel like i'm being stabbed with a really big knife. when will i ever get some relief?

I am having severe pain in lower back. X-rays showed dextro condex scolosis, lower thoratic spine w/maximum angulation at 10 degrees.
The dr. messed up on a spinal 6 mos. ago when I gave birth by caesarean. Could this be what's causing my pain and condition?

I am 60 years old and have had scoliosis untreated since I was probably 14 or 15...I was never diagnosed. I found out about it when I was 17 and in the Army, I jumped off a truck with a full field pack and I experienced a severe pain right up my spine. I read all types of articles about this problem but basically felt that each person is different and they would have to develope their own treatment or therapy, I use a gravity hanging device a few times a week, I do stretches daily and some modified yoga..I try to swim at least once a week. I have put on some weight the last few years, this doesn't help matters. I have read about the braces and have heard about operations but am somewhat apprehensive.

I found out i had scoliosis at age 12. Went to the Shriners Hospital for years in Tampa ,Fl and all they did was watch it as it got worse. At age 16 my mom decided to get another doctor so she found Dr.Desmond Brown an orthopedic surgeon in our local hospital. Right away he said it should have never gotten that bad from when i started so he said i needed scoliosis surgery because my curve was past 50 degrees and i had a c shaped curvature, so at age 17 i had the surgery. The first couple of years was fine after i got adjusted to it then the pain started. i had my first child at 19 only 2 years after, everything went fine with that, I had my second child at 27. Now i'm 30 years old, I have back pain everyday with the 2 herrington rods and spinal fusion i have in my back, I have 2 missing disc and more are wearing away because of the weight in my spine from the rods, i recently found out i have spinal stenosis, i have had sciatica for years at different times in the year and everything is only getting worse so i say to all people out there if the curvature is bad enough get the surgery or otherwise be crooked, made fun of and in pain either way because of the pressure of the curved spine. I believe the braces don't work, they are just an aggravation in life. Surgery makes life alittle easier but it will never be the same. Scoliosis is not curable and is meant to be dealt with, so all we can do is deal and live life to the best we can make it out to be and hope they make better advances medically for it in the future so that our children and our childrens children don't suffer as we all have.

Hi hunny sorry to hear about ur curve that is when i got mine. I had to wear a brace for over three yrs. If thay sujest surgery, because its not getting better go for it. Im glad i did. when I was 16 pain gone Im 54 know had kids no back pain. Im still active an Had a great shape as a teen to me it was a dream come true when it was all over. But if ur back gets better as u grow older with the brace. u should be fine, but if that sujest it take it well worth it.
