Where To Buy A Good Memory Foam Mattress
The word is spreading; memory foam mattresses provide unparalleled support and comfort. Traditional inner-spring mattresses just can’t offer the same degree of restful sleep as this new type of mattress. But, not every memory foam mattress is created equal so you need to be careful about what you buy. Here’s what’s on offer from some of the big name players in the industry.
There are many manufacturers making memory foam mattresses. This is a good thing but also a bad thing for the consumer. The Tempurpedic mattress was the first on the market and remains the most popular today, but other brands now offer the consumer a greater choice, and at a price that is usually a good deal lower than buying a Tempur mattress. But, not all memory foam is the same. Each company has its own, secret recipe and some are definitely better than others.
First off, let’s take a look at the original memory foam mattress; the Tempurpedic. This mattress still sets the standard that other brands try to match. The foam used has a 5.3 lb/cubic foot density. This is important as this plays the most important part in how the mattress feels (comfort) and how much support it gives. Basically, this measurement tells you how heavy the material is for every cubic foot. Many other manufacturers tout that their foam is much cheaper than that of Tempur, but you’ll usually find that their mattresses have a lb/cubic foot density somewhere between 2.5 and 4.0. This makes the foam softer and fails to provide good support. Of course, they produce a mattress with a lower density because manufacturing costs are reduced: less material; more air.

In the early days, there was only one type of mattress available from Tempur but now the company makes several types. The ClassicBed is the original. The Tempurpedic AdjustableBed along with its specially designed base, allows you to change the position of the mattress. It has a patented ‘Wallhugger’ design so that you stay nearer to your nightstand. The idea behind the adjustable mattress is that it can help alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux, lower back pain, hiatal hernia, minor arthritic pain and much more.
The best selling mattress from Tempurpedic is called the CelebrityBed. It comes with an even thicker top layer of memory foam. This gives it a softer feel than that of the ClassicBed; an old complaint was that a Tempurpedic mattress was too firm, so the introduction of this model was a smart move by the company.
Sealy are the world’s largest manufacturer of mattresses so it isn’t surprising that it has started to make its own version of memory foam mattresses. Currently, there are 3 models to choose from; the Sealy TrueForm 8 series, 9 series and 11 series. The numbers indicate the overall thickness of the mattress. Also, each mattress uses memory foam of a 5.25 lb/cubic foot density, which tells you it is of good quality. The 8 series comes with a top layer of 3″ 5.25 lb memory foam and 5″ of high density foam. The 9 series comes with a top layer of 3″ 5.25 lb memory foam and 5″ of high density foam giving the mattress a slightly more firm and supportive feel. Finally, the 11 series comes with 1.5″ Convoluted Visco Top Layer of 5.25lb density, followed by a 3.5″ Visco Middle Layer of 5.25lb density with a 6″ Polyurethane Core of 2.15lb density. The idea behind the middle layer of convoluted foam is to help reduce heat that some sleepers complain of when sleeping on any kind of foam mattress.
Sealy mattresses are of good quality and cost a little less than a comparable Tempur-Pedic mattress.
Not to be left behind, Serta has released its version called the True Response mattress. It too uses a high density core – it’s 10″ thick. The top layer is of lighter, memory foam. The company doesn’t specify what the density of the foam is, why they don’t give out this information is a mystery; a high density is usually a major selling point for a manufacturer.
The Serta True Response mattress does come with Smart Fabric Technology by Outlast. This fiber layer is designed to wick away moisture and regulate body temperature for a cooler, more restful sleep – as stated before, heat is often an issue for some when sleeping on a memory foam mattresses.
The Serta retails for around the same price as a comparable Sealy.
All of the above 3 are major players in this sector. They aren’t the only ones, but each is a well-known company with a good reputation. All offer excellent warranties with its memory foam mattress. Choosing which is better is very much down to personal choice. Some may find the Tempur a little too firm while others prefer the look and feel of the Sealy. The best advice is to actually go along to a store and try each one of them out before you buy.

I need to know where I can get an egg crate mattress/topper that is fire retardent. Being fire retardent is a requirement of the California State Prison System where an inmate I am writing for has a prescription for one, but it must be–
1. fire retardent, and
2 be purchasable from somewhere in California.
The inmate has a severe back proble and really needs this. Can you help me by letting me know what brand(s) is fire retardent, and may be purchesed from somewhere in California.
Thank you

Hello,
have you tried searching online? I’d try that first. Maybe Target or Walmart? I have an eggcrate topper, but I bought it in FL. Sorry I’m not more help! GOOD LUCK IN FINDING ONE!
PS: shouldn’t the prison be looking into this since it’s prescribed?

I purchased a Novaform mattress less than 5 years ago from Costco, and I cannot find my receipt. When I was at Costco some time ago I noticed that there is a 10 year warranty on this foam. I can take pictures and send you as you will be able to see the “product” now.
Any help or assistance would be appreciated.

Hi, I just wondered if you had paid for your mattress with a credit or debit card – the merchant can usually look up the receipt if you can provide the date of purchase.

I have a Land And Sky Prestige (King size) memory foam mattress that I purchased July 05. During the first month I was out of town a lot with work, so I only got to sleep on it on the weekends. So there went my 30 day trial period. Within the first few months we called back to where we purchased it and complained about how you get back in bed and roll right back into the spot you slept in the night before. A rep for L&S came by saying it was normal and that we need to slept all different ways on the mattress to break it in. 4 1/2 yrs later my wife hasn’t slept on it after the first few months. I’ve slept on it every way possible to break it in. But, nothing has changed. I have to to split the bed in thirds so I don’t sleep in the same spot 2 nights in a row.
What can I do with this expensive problem? I’ve been thinking about small claims court.

We have had an Ortho memory foam mattress for 3 1/2 years. It has been very comfortable until about 4 months ago. We both now wake up in the night with terrible back aches. No matter how much tossing and turning we do, our backs still ache! This was a very expensive mattress and Ortho’s warranty policy is anything but consumer friendly. Any suggestions or comments?

I had the same issues as you, however not with a memory foam mattress. I had a eurotop mattress for about three years though. Anyway in my confusion about which would be a suitable mattress I stumbled upon an awesome mattress blog online. Here’s the website , ask any question on the blog. The blog owner is a mattress guru and will answer almost the same day, if you post real early in the morning, or will do so the next day. He helped me through all of my mattress dilemnas. Hope this helps. Oh, by the way, a memory foam mattress is something I thought I should get until I read this blog. You might like it.

Anyway, I thought I posted the website. If it doesn’t show up again just google or yahoo “mattress blog” and it’ll take you right to it.

I am contemplating buying the bragada memory foam matress. Is this a good mattress? It has 5.3 lb. memory foam a 9″ crown. Do you like the memory foam matresses? I am 73 and need a matress that doesn’t have sore spots. Thanks so much for your reply.

We bought a Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress several years ago. After about 4 years we both woke up with severe back aches. It is now in our guest room with an “egg crate” foam topper on it which I purchased at Wal Mart. They are not what they are “cracked” up to be. Never again!

Husband and I are looking for new matress. It is a jungle out there. Memory foam we hear can be too hot, breaks down after awhile. Select number matresses have good and bad reviews. We are both having neck and back issues with our mattress now and it is only 4 years old

I was trying to send this to Tempurpedic and my system wouldn’t let me, so for your info, don’t buy this bed:
Four years ago we bought a king mattress from Relax the Back on Ventura Blvd. in Cal. Last year I called to say that our bed was breaking down and we wanted a service person to come out. I was told I had to call Tempurpedic. I did and was told that I couldn’t have a service person come out and that I had to go through this ridiculous nonsense about measuring etc. We lived in a senior apartment as we are seniors and could not possibly lift the bed. Also, the box spring was squeaking from all sides.
We finally gave in and bought a new regular mattress last week from a store that sells your bed. I told them our story about your bed and they do have a service man come out to check it. I should have gone through them.
Consequently, I gave it to a person who was in need of a bed. To ask anyone to lift a king mattress and go through all that crap is nonsense. You obviously do not stand by your product and won’t help your customers. On top of that, the service person was cold and very unhelpful.
Needless to say, after going what we did and spending $3000.00, we will not recommend your bed and tell anyone who is going to buy one, NOT TO BUY IT!!!!
