Herniated Disc Pain: Finding A Cure

By Adam Webster Webster

Herniated disc refers to the protrusion of the disc. It is basically the same when one says of a bulging disc. This condition is painful. Its occurrence is manifested by a herniated disc pain that is usually felt on the back area. This condition is generally common on the lumbar area than on other areas of the spine.

As a person grows older, his or her disc tends to be brittle, dry and less cushiony. Once the disc is weak, the outer part is prone to tearing or any damage. The internal substance of the disc pushes through the tear. As this happens, the person can experience herniated disc pain. Herniated disc occurs for most people aging from 30 years old and up.

Herniated disc pain can be felt at the lower back part down to the legs and feet. But generally, the pain is felt in one side only. The pain will be manifested depending on which side the weak or damaged disc is located. The herniated disc pain also varies on the pressure put upon the nerve by the bulging disc. Most patients under this condition complain of spreading pain over their buttocks that goes down one thigh down to their calf. Others experienced the herniated disc pain on their two legs, while some legs felt numb, weak or tingly.

To reduce your herniated disc pain, or to minimize its intensity, try shifting positions. You may discover that supporting yourself up with both your hands while sitting down alleviates the pain. Shifting weight from one side is also helpful.

Physicians make sure if their patients are really suffering from a herniated disc by asking relevant questions, doing some thorough physical examinations, and diagnostic testing like x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography scan. Medications may be prescribed to ease the pain. Somehow, it helps depending on the patient’s reaction to it. Other than medications, some form of treatments are then applied like physical exercises as ordered by a professional physical therapist, special massages for suitable for such medical conditions, chiropractic care, postural changes and the last resort, surgery. Surgeries are only done when all the other non-invasive treatments do not work and if severe pain is still present after six weeks or more. But note that not all herniated disc patients can get surgery for their treatment. It will still greatly depend on their entire health condition, their decision and other essential factors.

Herniated disc pain varies from mild, moderate to extremely agonizing. Apropos medications and treatments may be readily available, but do not neglect the fact that not all work the same for everybody. You may need a different approach than what most are taking. But be assured that with technologies and medical science that they are these days, there seem to be enough solutions to medical crisis already.

all my pain is in my neck because of my c5 and c6.one is herniated and the other is degenerating. im in so much pain i can barley move my neck, help me if you can?

  3. By Ashley on Jun 12, 2009 | Reply

I had the same thing. the disk between C5 and C6 was herniated and ruptered. the nerve mine was on was causing nerve damage down my right arm to the point i couldn’t pick anything up w/out dropping it. We had to do surgery pretty much right away to correct it. Once nerve damage begins, it’s irreversable. being only 26 i sure didn’t need that! nobody does for that matter. So I would suggest finding a doctor you are comfortable with and have surgery to correct it. I know the pain you’re going through! I’m actually still in pain and I had my surgery Last sept. My bones never fused back together again so i’m looking at another surgery. Going to a doctor at Campbell’s clinic though this time. I would definitely suggest finding a Campbell’s clinic near yourself to have it done. they’re the best! I feel for you! Nothing you can take to control the nerve pain like that. good luck!

I have 3 herniated discs in my back. I’ve been taking physical therapy with traction.I’ve done traction 6 times so far now my nerve pain in going down my left leg again. The physical therapist said she thinks I have a torn disc. I had back surgery 5 yrs ago and felt 100% better. The Dr. took 2 discs out. After getting into a car accident i’m back in the same situation again facing surgery. I’ve already went through 2 months of physical already and now my Dr. Who is a spine surgeon wants me to do it again with traction. So it’ll be 4 months of physical therapy in another month. The physical therapy helps for a short time and then symptoms come back. Any advice out there for a torn disc. Thanks, Deb

    Hi Pam,
I would go take Advil it’s for anti-flammtory. I would go to the Doctor and get checked.Go to webmd.com Burning in your head has to do with your blood pressure and high blood pressure. this sounds like two different things. I was told by a dr to sleep on my stomach when i have nerve pain in my back and legs. I hope this helps you.

Where is campbell’s clinic? If you want the experts in spine surgery, there are 3 doctors in Germany who are the best. They patented ADR’s (25 years ago) and have been doing all other surgeries for the same time.

Has anyone tried spinal decompression therapy? I recently found out that I have a herniated L5 disk. The chiropractor recommended spinal decompression therapy but cannot guarantee the results. The cost is $3,700.00.

    Hi Maureen,
I’m going through decompression therapy now traction.I have a herinated disc that is on my nerve root.My is l-5 also. It doesn’t work.. don’t waste your money.when you have a herinated disc i would go to a dr not a chiroprator, he can make your back worse. It happened to me.

Thanks for your input Debra. I really appreciate it. I’m still trying to figure out my options and how to handle my herniated disc. I wish you the best of luck with your back. Thanks again!

    Hi Ann,
I’m sorry to hear about your insurance and pain.I have a weight problem and I’m losing weight on Herbalife.I drink 2 meal replacement and eat one meal a day with 2 snacks a day. My energy has soared and I feel alot better than I did. I had back surgery in 2003. Before I was in so much pain.It helped me to get out of the house and walk after, i had surgery. I’d talk to your dr and get differnet pain meds if your pain meds aren’t working. Don’t give up.

I had surgery about 4 yrs ago. i had 2 discectomy and 1/2 of one removed and the doctor said my percentage rate of feeling better and being able to walk pain free by 80o/o. well 4 years later i am in so much pain that there are days is wish i was dead.

    Hi Donna,
I had back surgery 5yrs ago and they removed 2 discs. I felt 100% better, I got out and walked about 6 months after surgery.I was walking 15 miles a week.It helped alot. Now,I was in a car accident in Dec 2008.It crushed one of my discs and it’s on my nerve. So I’m looking at surgery again to get it off my nerve. My Dr. called me today to tell me my MRI results. He says we are going to have a discussion on Sept 17.I had a MRI in March nothing has changed since, I went through 4 months of physical therapy and traction I’m not looking forward to the pain again. Is there any way you can get a Corti-shot in your back to help with your pain? I’ll pray for you. Keep your chin up.I can feel your pain,I’ve been throught it all before, it’s no fun at all.Take Care,Donna your not alone, Debbie

    Hi Lydia,
How are you? Dr Bert in Coos Bay,Ore did my surgery. He did a great Job. I live in Fitchburg,Mass. It’s so hot here today. Is it nerve pain you are having? My Physical therapist told me to sleep on my stomach when I have nerve pain in my back or going down my legs and it worked I didn’t feel any pain. But the pain has came back. Have you had any corti-shots?They will help for pain. Check with your Dr to see if you can get one.You need to get it and talk to a Spine Surgeon.Where do you live? Check the internet for the best Orthopeadics in your area. Keep me posted on how your doing. Deb

the spinal injections then the PT with a different type of threapis Feldenkrais, most Doctors don’t know or agree with it, I have had this treatment a cople times a week and it helped loosen up the muscles I am not going to say it doesn’t hurt but the movement you get from the treatments worked wonders. I was unable to lift my arm above my head without the pain stabbing me in the side. I needed the surgery but it helped with recovery and relief. I am in need of a 3rd surgery but i still get the treatments for strength and movment.

Hi everyone! I have been in pain for approx 3 years. I have bulging discs in all of my discs but now i have 3 herniated in c3-4 c4-5 c6-7 that affect my neck and both arms to the point that I cannot funtion on most days, and cant sleep nights! I an currently doing P/T and traction, that is not helping! But the best part is the fact that the doctors dont want to give pain meds because they really dont help! The fact is that they may not totally make you pain free, but they make me more comfortable so i dont want to blow my head off!!! I asked about epidoral shots, and was told that the damage is too close to my spinal cord so i feel for everyone who has back problems! People that dont take it for granted!!!! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!!!

I have had headaches or migraines for approx 8 yrs. 2-3 X a week they are severe, the others are prob rebound headaches from meds. I’ve seen alot of doctors and tried alot of meds and nothing helps. I’ve been at my wits and getting depressed. Recently, I had an MRI and discovered I have herniated discs C6&7. My pain management Dr. says that’s what’s causing my headaches. He sent me to another Dr. to get shots in my neck for pain relief. But this new Dr. says discs are NOT what’s causing my headaches. In the meantime, I have been researching lazer surgery. I sent MRI to L.S.I. in Tampa and they said they do believe it will help my headaches. But the Dr. I just saw here said it will not help headaches and wants me to do PT. In the last couple months I have started to have more problems with my upper back,ie pinched nerves almost weekly, muscle spasms daily, and had to stop working out. I stopped jogging a couple months ago on strong advice from my Dr.
So confused on what to do!

I just learned I have bulging discs from L1 through L5-S1, with grade 1 spinal stenosis. I think my doctor was actually shocked that the arthritis is this bad, as am I. I have an appt. with Physiatry tomorrow and am wondering what they will be able to do for me.

I just went to my regular MD and told him my MRI is showing protruding discs(C6-7). I told him my headaches continue to be a problem. He said I am having “Cervicogenic Headaches.” I have been researching on the internet and they are related to neck problems. I am so relieved to actually know what these headaches are! I have been misdiagnosed for years and tried so many meds. I am probably going to have Lazer surgery for my discs in Dec.

Hi Maureen and Debra, Sorry to hear about your L5-S1 problems. The chiropractor adjusted me in July and I have been in major pain ever since When I walked into his office with only a little muscle ache in the middle of my back. Just paid $800 for a private MRI as I have been in constant 24/7 pain. He had a copy of my MRI from 1 1/2 years ago showing this problem but just kept adjusting my lower back. I didn’t know that you shouldn’t get adjusted with this problem but now I am in so much pain I’m no meds and can’t do normal activies or operate my cleaning business which I have had for over 7 years. I agree with Debra, DO NOT get chiro adjustments with herniated discs. I found out the very hard way.

I have 6 herniated discs, 3 in the neck and 3 in the lower back. I have had 2 heart attacks in the last 8 months and an anerusym on my heart repaired also. I am in a lot of pain but the doctors say there is nothing they can do because my heart is too weak. I just know there has to be another answer… any suggestions?
