I feel for you. On October18th,2007 I had spinal-fusion surgery of my entire lower lumber from S-1 to L-4. The surgery was put off for as long as I could bear, until my right leg went numb and I collapsed at work as a car saleman, and woke up in the ER with little to numb feelings in my right leg right down to the big toe. The pain was unbearable, as my sciatic nerve must have been pinched by one of the 5 herniated or bulging dics and thus the diagnosis of degeneratine disc disease and stenosis. The surgeon did a wonderful job in that I am now able to walk and have not experienced pain or numbness in my leg since the surgery
The pain and discomfort in my back is much worse post-surgery. I was on 8mgs of Dilaudid every 4 hours for the 1st 3and a half months, with horrible constipation and stomach pains that sometimes hurt worse than my back did I was then switched to Vicodin5/500 2 pills every 6 hours. My pain was worse than ever. My surgeoun would not consider putting me on anything stronger and I didn't want to go back to the Dilaudid. I already sufferd that immediate withdrawal but I am now permenantly disabled( I cannot walk, sit or stand for more than about 20 minutes before the constant "migraine headache" in my back turns to feelings similar to a razorblade slice across the 2 areas where the scatic nerve begins at the bottomof your back and the top of your buttocks) my it band feels black and blue like its been hit with a baseball bat all day. I am seeing a pain management specialist from now on, and I'd like some adcvie as to what type of painkiller, what dosage and how often from people with surgery and experiences similar to mine. I am also almost a complete insomniac, bought a tempupedic mattress, do what little physical theapy daily that I can stand, and have had inhections, accupuncture, chiropractic and other treatments over the past 25+ years. But this pain and all this metal in my back is the worse thing ever, and I need to get some relief from this constant pain and lack of sleep. I welcome any and all suggestions View and comment on this thread at the Back Pain Forum
